Catherine Schalk Obituary

Catherine “Kitty” Schalk, 93, formerly of North Syracuse, passed away on Wednesday, May 3, 2018 at Loretto Health & Rehab Center.
This 100% Irishwoman was born in Syracuse in July of 1924. She was the middle of three daughters born to the late John and Catherine (Haskell) Lynch. She was the widow of her beloved husband, Richard C. Schalk who passed away in 1997. They had been happily married for 49 years.

Kitty was raised in the Catholic faith. Through the decades she had been a communicant of St. Rose of Lima and Sacred Heart Parishes. She always wore a few religious medals and scapulas around her neck,
and carried a rosary in her pocket at all times. Throughout the years, Kitty lit a daily novena candle in front of her Lady of Fatima statue for all her family’s special intentions.

Kitty’s interests, besides her sons’ activities, were home decorating, gardening, country crafts, antiques and garage sales. She embraced being a grandmother and great-grandmother with much pride and joy.  She was a true dog lover, having enjoyed many pets over the decades. Her Irish humor was always present in her laugh, twinkling eyes and optimism of life.

Survivors include her four sons: Richard M. (Virginia); Donald F. (Mary); David P. (Crystal) and Daniel E.
Also, her sister-in-law, Edna Krause; brother-in-law Alden Ellis; “sister” Rose Gould: 16 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; as well as, many nieces and nephews spread across the United States.

Besides her parents and husband, Kitty was pre-deceased by her son, Gary .R.; sisters , Mary (Lynch) Ellis and Esther (Lynch) Ponzo; her step- mother LaVerne (Gerthhoffer) Wilber Lynch; her step-brothers, Thomas and James Wilber; her grandson, Teddy Schalk; and daughter-in law, Amber(Kurtnacker) Schalk.

Calling hours will be from 4-7pm on Monday, May 7th at the Sears-Middleton-Jones Funeral Home, North Main Street, North Syracuse. Interment will be beside her husband and son at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Dewitt. Burial services will be private and at the convenience of the immediate family.

And until we meet again, Mom, may God hold you in the palm of his hand.
