Henry Weyer Obituary

CMSgt. Henry William Weyer (73) of Cicero, NY died surrounded by his loving family on January 29, 2022 after a courageous, 16-year battle with cancer. Henry was a husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, veteran, firefighter, and friend to all those who knew and loved him. His soul is at rest, but his memory and his heart will live on.

Henry was born on August 15, 1948 in Paterson, NJ to Hugo and Evelyn (Lyman) Weyer. He grew up in Utica, NY and attended Whitesboro High School. Henry married the love of his life and his best friend, Linda Cardamone, on April 27, 1968.  They met at the Highland Roller Rink in Utica- it was love at first sight and from that moment on they were never separated. Together Henry and Linda had three children, ten grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife Linda, his daughter Michele Weyer of Williamstown, NY, and sons Chris (Sarah) Weyer of Binghamton, NY and Timothy (Qasha) Weyer of Cicero, NY. His legacy will continue to live on through his grandchildren, Mike, Jen, Joe, and Nick (Whitney) Brady; Ethan and Eli Weyer;  Sophia and Olivia Weyer; Aubrey Panto and Kelan Diaz; his great grandchildren Jayden and Payton Brady; Alyssa and Aliyah Brady; and niece and nephew Tracy (Andy) Esposito and Danny Watkins. Henry was predeceased by his parents Hugo and Evelyn Weyer, his in-laws Samuel and Margaret Cardamone, his twin brothers lost at birth, and his two precious grandchildren who he always held close to his heart, Samuel Thomas and Mia Kristen Weyer.

At 19, Henry enlisted in 1967 as a member of the 174th Tactical Fighter Wing Group in the New York Air National Guard. He was assigned to the Hancock Field in Syracuse, NY and began his career working on the air fleet as a pneudraulics repairman maintaining aircrafts.  In 1981, he was promoted as the superintendent of Quality Assurance where he was responsible for the quality control of the airfleet. He was assigned to deficiency analysis and the military position of Jet Engine Inspector.  He retired after 35 years of service as a Chief Master Sergeant and was extremely proud to be a member of “The Boys From Syracuse”.

Henry was called to active duty in 1990 when he deployed to Al Kharj Air Base , Saudi Arabia in support of Operation Desert Shield- Desert Storm. He returned to the Persian Gulf Area of operation two more times in Operation Provide Comfort II (1995) and Operation Northern Watch (1997) all in support of contingency operations against Iraq. He also provided home station support during Operation Noble Eagle with combat air patrols over several eastern coast cities immediately after the attacks on September 11, 2001. He received many awards, medals, and accommodations during his 35 year career.  His military awards and decorations include the Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with Valor, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with Mobilization, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, Kuwait Liberation Medal: Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait Liberation Medal: Kuwait. Henry retired honorably from duty on April 29, 2002.

Henry also spent his life serving others as a volunteer member of the North Syracuse Fire Department.  He joined the department in 1975 and was a lifetime member who faithfully worked as a firefighter, fire marshall, and as president/ vice- president of the organization. He served on the Town of Cicero Fire Board, the Town of Clay Fire Board, and worked as the Assistant Fire Marshall for the Village of North Syracuse. He was a member of the Fireman’s Association of the State of New York. He was very proud of his service and believed that helping other people was his calling. He enjoyed the camaraderie of serving with his company brothers and protecting the people of his community. Henry believed that family, community, and country were the cornerstones of a person’s life. As a soldier and a firefighter, protecting and assisting others provided him with great purpose and happiness.

In his freetime, Henry enjoyed woodworking and building things in his garage with his sons and grandsons. He was very proud of the home in which he and Linda built and raised their family. He embraced home improvement projects and was always willing to help when his children or grandchildren needed assistance.  He had a love/ hate relationship with his backyard pool but certainly took pleasure in drinking a Corona poolside when time permitted. He loved relaxing with family in the backyard, watching the grandkids swim, barbecuing food, and telling stories from the past.  He enjoyed going fishing and boating as well as watching baseball; he was an avid NY Mets spectator and Syracuse University basketball fan.
