Joan Allen Obituary

Joan Allen, our loving mother, was welcomed home into her Saviors arms, on March 3, 2026, at the age of 90. She passed peacefully in the home of her daughter, with loving family members by her side.  She will be remembered for her ever present love for our Lord and Savior, as her faith in Him guided her every step. Philippians 4:13 defined her life: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

Joan was born in Oneonta, NY in 1935. She moved to Elmira as a young teenager and graduated from Elmira Free Academy in 1953. Following high school, she worked at Prudential Insurance Company. She and her young family moved to North Syracuse in 1962.

She was a loving mother and homemaker who cared deeply for her family. She was a wonderfully talented seamstress and a real Do-It-Yourself enthusiast and a true “Joanie on the Spot”, always ready to help where needed.

Joan was involved in many activities including the early establishment of the North Area YMCA, 1970 environmental groups, the National AAU Marathon in Liverpool, NY and WCNY Tel-Auc. She was ever present, supporting her four children, at Cicero High School band events. She also chaired several fund raisers, as well as maintaining and distributing band uniforms.

She was a devoted servant of Christ, known for her unwavering faith and kindness.  She lived a very active church life at North Central Church in North Syracuse. She was an usher, worked with the finance committee and was a favorite babysitter for many of the moms and youngsters at North Central. Additionally, she used her sewing talents to make costumes for the Easter and Christmas plays and she was an integral part of the food pantry run by North Central. Through the church, she also became involved with helping young men in the Teen Challenge program. She was always there for others, giving them a heartfelt hug, keeping them in her prayers, giving advice and being a steady hand or shoulder when they needed it.

Joan was cherished by the following survivors, her sister, Constance Hurley, her four children, Robert (Nancy) Allen, Susan (Gary) Baier, Beth (Clem) Thompson, and Belinda Rogers, eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and a loving extended family and network of friends.

Joan was predeceased by her parents, her sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and James Orcutt, her step-brothers, Jim and Jack Dougherty and her half-sister, Sandra Keator.

A celebration of life will be scheduled for later this year.
