It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Marlena Daher-Rahman, who peacefully passed away on March 16, 2025, at the age of 70 in Dewitt, New York, surrounded by her loving family.
Marlena was born in 1955, in Buffalo, New York, to Albert and Claire Daher. She grew up in North Syracuse, where, at 17, she lost her mother and took on the role of a caregiver by helping to raise her younger brothers. Marlena was a graduate of Cicero North Syracuse High School, Class of 1973. She earned her associate degree from Onondaga Community College in 1976, pursued a bachelor’s degree from Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec, in 1978, and later obtained a Master of Science degree in Instructional Design and Development from Syracuse University in 1987. Marlena became a community leader and educational advocate, culminating in her career as the Associate Director for the SUNY Educational Opportunity Center.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Marlena was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She married Ali Abdur-Rahman in 1988, and together they built a life rooted in faith, strong values, and family. Marlena and Ali were foster parents for over 15 years, providing housing, food, and guidance to numerous youth. She was well known for her community service, aiding both students and adults alike. Marlena was an avid collector of art, jewelry, literature, and antiques. She found joy in spending time with her immediate and extended family, from Buffalo, New York, to as far as Lebanon. Marlena also spent time living in Beirut, Lebanon, as a child and young adult with her mother and other close family members.
Marlena is survived by her husband of 37 years, Ali Abdur-Rahman; her children, Ilyana Nehme (Joseph), Celine Rahman, and Najee Rahman; her grandson, Remy Nehme; her brothers, Albert Daher, Francis Daher (Caryn), and James Daher; and her nephew, Jonathan Daher. She is preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Claire Daher.
Calling hours for Marlena will be held on Friday, March 21, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Sears Middleton Mathewson Funeral Home, located at 209 N. Main St., North Syracuse, New York 13212, with a service to follow at 12:30 p.m.
Marlena will be remembered for her unwavering faith, dedication to her family, and the love she shared with those around her. She will be deeply missed, but her impact on her community and the people she touched will live on forever.
