Mary Elizabeth Wood, passed away after a long illness at age 86 on March 1, 2023. Born on November 5, 1936 as Mary Elizabeth Scannell, the youngest of three children born to Michael Joseph Scannell (born September 19, 1903 died August 29, 1967) of Knocknadiha Tournafulla (County of Limerick, Ireland) and Mary Theresa Vaughan (born July 18, 1901 died March 6, 1986) of Direen Athea (County of Limerick, Ireland). Her two other siblings predeceased her, Daniel Joseph Scannell (1927-1968) and Cornelius (Connie) Scannell (1930-1935).

She was a graduate of St. Vincent de Paul School, Syracuse. She was married on October 8, 1960, at St. Vincent de Paul Church to James Roger Wood and has three surviving children, Robin Theresa (Richard) Parente of Cicero, Daniel Brenner (Tammy) Wood of Fulton and Kevin Michael Wood of Arlington, VA (Washington, DC).

She was widowed from James on January 26, 1992 who was a retiree from National Grid (Niagara Mohawk). Mary was a professional working woman from an early age, first working for General Electric in Syracuse and later for many years for Onondaga-Cortland-Madison Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) as an Executive Assistant. She had been retired for many years and was a devoted parishioner of Sacred Heart Church in Cicero. Until her health failed her, she enjoyed extensive travel around North America, social groups and was an avid reader. Mary was known for her kindness, faith and opening her heart to anyone that needed a friend or understanding. She was a first generation American as both her parents were immigrants from Ireland and she was proud of her Irish heritage her entire life.

She was a proud grandmother of three to Kyle Parente of North Syracuse, Erin (Brett) Koeppel of Buffalo and Thomas Wood of Fulton.
