Robert J. McNamara, 80, of North Syracuse, "just a kid from Mattydale," passed away on November 14, 2024, at the VA Medical Center Hospital in Syracuse, NY.
Robert was born on January 1, 1944, in Cortland, NY, to the late Robert and Marilyn McNamara, Sr. He was a 1961 graduate of North Syracuse High School and a lifelong Syracuse resident. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1961 to 1967. He received an associate’s degree in criminal justice from Onondaga Community College in 1989. He retired from the State of New York, where he was an accomplished title searcher with the Attorney General’s Office.
Bob also cherished his time working for Bob Maxwell’s Walk-A-Way Sundaes during the summers, traveling to New York county fairs. Whether serving sweet treats or connecting with fairgoers, he found joy in the camaraderie of the road and the excitement of the summer crowds.
Bob was a passionate train enthusiast and a proud member of the Central New York National Railroad Historical Society. His love for trains and railroad history was a defining part of his life, and he enjoyed connecting with fellow enthusiasts and preserving the rich legacy of railroads for future generations. Bob also found joy in many other activities, including fishing, boating, camping, and reading. Above all, he treasured time spent with his family, and his loved ones were the heart of his life.
Bob tragically passed away as the result of a car accident caused by a drunk driver. While his life was cut short, he will be remembered for his ability to think outside the box and solve problems with whatever was at hand—much like the beloved TV character MacGyver. Whether fixing a broken appliance, navigating life’s challenges, or helping friends and family in need, Bob always found a way to make things work, no matter how complicated the situation.
He was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Marilyn McNamara, and his sister, Elizabeth Koagel.
He will be deeply missed by his children, Kelly (Jay) Slocum, Mary Rochette, Steven McNamara, and Joni McNamara; his grandchildren, Jeremy Slocum, Ryan Slocum, Meghan (Chad) Goyer, Casey Rochette, Tracey Rochette, Alexis McNamara, and Jason Steves; and his great-grandchildren, Jaxon and Landon. He is also survived by his siblings, Marilyn McNamara, Kathleen (Greg) Gonya, and David McNamara, his former wife, Joan Pagano, as well as a large extended family and his dear friends at Pitcher Hill Apartments.
