Thomas H. Murphy, Liverpool, New York, died Friday, May 12, at St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center in Syracuse.
Tom was born in Ilion in 1934, the son of George and Mary Luebbert Murphy. He was a graduate of Ilion High School and the Culinary Institute of America, New Haven, Connecticut.
He served in the United States Army and was stationed in Fort Dix, Fort Benning and the Continental Army Command at Fort Monroe.
Tom’s hospitality career included positions as executive chef at Hotel Syracuse and general manager of Bellevue Country Club. He was a member and past president of both the Syracuse Branch of Food Service Executives and the New York State Club Managers Association. He volunteered at Oasis, WCNY, and Beaver Lake.
Tom enjoyed the family camp at Kayuta Lake, his backyard garden, the Sunday paper, the Men of Note chorus, and his multitude of friends. He cooked and baked—Sunday dinners for his family and treats that he delivered to neighbors new and old. Each year he made and donated a couple thousand cookies to WCNY for their auction volunteers.
Surviving Tom are his wife of 65 years, Doreen Pelletier Murphy, along with children Joan Murphy Robson and Rob Robson, Lauren Murphy and Raymond Rocha, Carl Murphy and Lisa Sheridan Murphy, Kristen Murphy Panzetta and Frank Panzetta, Patrick Murphy and Margaret Hayes Murphy, Cece Murphy, and Cho Murphy.
Well-loved grandchildren are Zak Robson, Natalie Robson Randall and Adam Randall, Nate Robson, Rosanna Rocha, Ben Rocha, Sam Murphy, Anna Panzetta Tilley and Quinn Tilley, Joe Panzetta, Anthony Panzetta, Mary Panzetta, Tom Panzetta, Katherine Murphy Bradley and Keith Bradley, and Maureen Murphy. Predeceasing Tom was granddaughter Samantha Murphy.
Great-grandchildren who enriched Tom’s life are Anne-Marie, Eliza, Laura, Kayne, James, Molly, Troy, and Luke.
Predeceasing Tom were his sisters Mary Murphy LaLonde, Pat Murphy Fletcher, Joan Murphy Robinson, Lois Murphy Manley, and his brother Larry Murphy.
He leaves, as well, brothers- and sisters-in law Chuck Robinson, Gloria Murphy, Elaine Stowell, and Joe and Mary Jo Pelletier, along with many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are Friday, May 19, 4 to 6 pm, at Christ the King Church, Cherry Tree Circle, Liverpool. Tom is an anatomical donor to Upstate Medical University.
